Romsey Choral Society is an auditioned choir. The audition process ensures a certain level of ability on entry to the choir and that this level is maintained subsequently.
What to expect......
You will be invited to attend a short audition with the Musical Director to confirm your membership. Our audition process is brief, simple and designed to hear you at your very best!
Firstly, you will be asked sing some simple vocal exercises to hear your voice and assess your range - to see whether you are best placed as a 1st or 2nd within your voice part.
Secondly, we ask you to bring a prepared piece of your own choosing - this can be anything from an unaccompanied folk song or carol to a part of a choral piece that you know. The MD will hear a short section of this, and may work briefly on a couple of aspects to improve it.
Finally, we will ask you to sing a short section from a piece that the choir has rehearsed with you earlier in the evening. We understand that the pressure of sight-reading under audition conditions can lead even the most confident singer to disaster! You will have had the chance to sing it with the rest of the choir and learn it in your own way. You may be given the chance to repeat sections with help from the MD.
When will I hear the outcome?
The MD will tell you immediately whether or not you will be admitted to the choir and you will be offered helpful and positive feedback for ways to improve your performance regardless of the outcome. Choral singing is a team activity and you will be assessed on your own merits and what you can offer to the choir. There are regular ‘Vocal checks’ at 3-5 year intervals for all choir members.
